Silverfish

About Silverfish
Silverfish are closely related to the Firebrats. They are gray or brownish wedge-shaped wingless insects that hide in cracks during daylight hours and appear at night, looking for food. Silverfish feed on starches, sugars, and proteins they gather from bookbinding’s, glazed paper and dead insects. They enjoy high humidity and relatively warm temperatures, (70-85° ). Cardboard and other paper products brought into the home often contain Silverfish.

Older books and papers or sweet and starchy material kept in warm, moist dark places are the perfect location for the insect infestation. Because silverfish are a hazard to both food supplies in the home or business and important books and papers, they can be a costly problem.

About Beetles
There are a wide variety of beetles, which may effect an equal range of damage to household items, including food supply. The most innocent of all the beetles found around the home is the Ground Beetle. They are similar in appearance to and often confused with the common Cockroach. Ground Beetles live and breed outdoors and sometimes enter buildings and become a pest, yet do not infest the food supply or cause structural damage.

Carpet Beetles are not so innocent. They are scavengers that attack and do serious damage to clothing, upholstery, curtains, and furniture, especially products that contain wool. Hair, feathers, fur, dried meat and milk, grains and flour are also favorite feeding material for the insects. The Carpet Beetle is often associated with rodent, bird and bat nesting places.

Drug Store and Cigarette Beetles are common pests that feed on food products yet the most popular and well known is the Flour Beetle. They are found in flourmills, grocery stores, warehouses, and homes. Flour Beetle and Saw Toothed Grain Beetle feed on stored food products such as grain, flour, cake mixes, herbs, beans and peas, cereal products and other starchy foods and pet food pellets.

The damage from a single beetle infestation can be quite costly both to the business owner and the private homeowner. Let the Professionals a Terminator Termite and Pest Management suggest and implement a plan that will provide maximum safety for your children, pets, and food supply.

About Ants
Ants are social insects whose colonies contain workers, males and queens. Ants require a high degree of moisture in order to survive and will travel far from the colony to satisfy that need. . There are many different varieties of ants found in New Jersey. Some, like the Yellow Ant, can be confused with Termites, yet cause no harm to structures. The common home invading ant in New Jersey is the Pavement Ant. The colony is usually found in foundation walls and concrete slabs.

Lined Acrobatic Ants can be found near damp wood, nesting beneath windowsills or roof gutters. The Thief Ant and Pharaoh Ant will feed on meat and foods that contain protein rather than sweet foods. The Little Black Ant nests in sandy soil but may be found in the home when foraging for food.

Spiders

About Spiders
Spiders are usually loners but can be found in larger populations. A fairly large infestation of spiders is a good indication that a larger insect problem exists. Spiders can be found in cluttered areas of the home; the basement, the garage, and the closet. Another favorite hiding place for the spider is behind the drapes. Nesting sites outside of the home include under debris such as leaves and woodpiles, under windows and eaves. Often, referrals to pest control experts come after a person has been bitten and a medical professional has suggested an exterminator be called. Because all spiders are potentially poisonous, care and concern should be taken.

The black widow spider, fiddle or brown recluse spider, hobo and family of sac spiders carry venom.
