New Jersey Termite Family - Terminator
The Eastern NJ subterranean termite has 3 castes or types within the family.
The Worker, soldier and reproductive are the 3 types or castes of New Jersey termite. The reproductive or aka swarmer find a mate break off their wings and burrow into the ground to colonize. During the first year the pair may only produce a few eggs. Once the queen is mature she may produce 5000-10000 eggs per year. The queen may live for many years, workers and soldiers live approximately 1 - 2 years.
A colony generally is considered mature once it reaches 5 - 10 years old at which time the colony may have 60 000 or more workers. Under ideal conditions the colony may be able to produce swarmers in 3 - 4 years time but in most cases this occurs when maturity is reached ( 5-10 years).
New Jersey termite colonies can exist for many years and some colonies are estimated in having more than 1 million termites. In the USA termites cause more than $5 Billion in damages and property owners spend more than $2 Billion controlling termites.
